The 'Utilities Village' UI
Developing from idea to working prototype for an interactive kiosk interface for the United Nations Organization. The goal was to create rural awareness of AIDS combined with acclimatizing them with the facilities of the internet to access information on relevant utilities like mandi prices, bus timings, civic health, education, panchayat updates, religious events and others. The model was based on data aggregation from the web and government sources and displaying them in an integrated environment with a non-textual, audio driven UI. The utilities were meant to address the information gap in remote localities that were cut off from the information highway. Design engagement included concept ideation, visualisation, UI execution, technical feasibility check, prototype development support and user testing.
Macromedia awarded first prize to this concept in an online contest in 2004 (Flashclash.com)
Kiosk home screen as bird's eye view of a generic Indian village, with zoom, pan functions to navigate the space and hotspots on regions (market, school, bus stop, health centre, farm etc.) to link to utilities.
Second level navigation as a 'walk through' the marketplace, with animated events having social messages. The shops and products are hotspots that allow users to navigate to the third level where they can access data on the market prices and connect to wholesalers directly, thereby eliminating middlemen.
